What is EFT Tapping?

Tapping is one of the most effective tools you can use to lower your stress levels.  It is used by therapists and coaches to support emotional wellbeing, and a simple form of it can also be used at home to manage those stressful situations.  Click here to learn more about EFT Tapping and how it can help you in your day-to-day life.

 step

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques.  Commonly known as "tapping," this skill involves tapping certain accupressure points on the body to calm the nervous system and reduce uncomfortable symptoms.  It's sometimes likened to acupuncture without the needles!

  • Benefits: People normally notice a rapid decrease in distress and overwhelm. Tapping can decrease cortisol levels and improve problem-solving and decision-making.  It seems to calm the brain's emotional system and help with emotional regulation.  Feelings such as anger and fear can be quickly reduced.

  • Research: Research is continually supporting EFT Tapping as an effective tool for multiple issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, pain, food cravings, and trauma.  Tapping benefits prove to be quick, effective, and lasting.

There are many variations on tapping that are all correct.  The key is to make sure you are aware of the acupressure points.  Some people find that they have a couple of favourite points that really make them feel better quite quickly.  While we would traditionally tap on all the points- if you're in a hurry, you can always choose one or two to focus on.  The tool that works for you is the one you'll use!  Click below for further information.

 step

There are 9 traditional tapping points.  In the video below, I demonstrate the tapping points and how to easily locate them.  Don't worry about trying to pinpoint the spot down to the millimeter!  By tapping with the tip of the finger in the right area, you are almost guaranteed to hit the acupressure point.

  • Setup Statement. When we tap on the first point- the side of the hand- we will use a setup statement.  This statement sounds something like this:  "Even though I (fill in your issue or symptom), I deeply and completely accept myself."  This is done at the beginning of the tapping to acknowledge and validate what is real in this moment and to set things up for moving on.

Some people have difficulty with saying or believing the second part of the setup statement.  That's OK!  You can always alter it to something that feels comfortable, like "I am open to accepting myself" or "I am moving toward accepting myself."

  • Round of Tapping. A round of tapping consists of the next 8 tapping points.  These are, in order: eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, under mouth, collarbone, under arm, and top of head.  I show you exactly how to find these in the video below.  Normally, we will do 2 rounds of tapping before checking in to see how things are feeling.

How do I tap for stress?

Stress is such a common occurrence in our everyday lives that we often think we just have to accept it and it's negative impact on our wellbeing.  But it doesn't have to be like that!  There are so many tools out there to help us overcome stress, and one of the simplest and most effective is tapping.  Keep reading to find out how to use tapping to reduce your stress reactions in the moment.

 Step

Of course we want to instill all the healthy habits that keep us in harmony and reduce our reaction to stress.  When those things just aren't enough, or we need an in-the-moment skill to manage what's coming at us, tapping can help.  The first step is to identify what is causing the stress and how that stress is showing up in your system.  You'll use these words that you come up with as you tap on the tapping points that you just learned.  You can tap on what is happening in the moment to help disconnect the reactions from the current situation, leading to a calmer you.  For more significant concerns, you can work with an EFT Practitioner to do clinical EFT Tapping.  Just email me at sonya@sonyafields.com if you'd like more information.

  • Mental and Emotional Symptoms. These are the things that are showing up in your mind and feelings.  Are you having trouble thinking clearly or making decisions?  Are you forgetting things?  Feeling sad or overwhelmed or anxious?  Make a list for yourself (in your mind or on paper) to help you know what words to use as you tap.

  • Physical Symptoms. These are the things that are happening in your body.  Do you have an upset stomach or other gut issues?  Is your heart pounding?  Feeling hot and sweaty?  Muscle aches and tension in your neck?  Try to really pay attention to what your body is telling you.  You may also notice that some hidden symptoms pop up as you go through the tapping.
